Help Your Teen Make and Keep School Friends
Research shows that there are academic as well as social consequences when students don’t make school friends.
Some teens find making friends more difficult than others. If your teen is among them, suggest that she:
- Ask for help. Your teen could ask another student to introduce her to other students.
- Discuss a common interest. If your teen likes a particular style of music, for example, have her learn as much as she can about it. Then when others talk about it, she’ll feel confident in joining in.
- Join a club at school or in the community, or start one. There are clubs that deal with everything from ecology to computers to chess. If your teen meets people who share her interests, she’ll make friends more easily.
- Take a risk. Encourage your teen to make the first move. She can talk to a classmate in algebra, for example, and ask a question about an assignment.
- Give and take. Tell your teen that friendships are based on give and take. She'll have to be a friend to have one.
- Value herself. The best way for your teen to make and keep friends is to respect her own worth as a friend.
