Keep Your Teen From Being Overwhelmed by Homework
It’s not uncommon for teens to become overwhelmed by the stress of having multiple homework assignments, particularly toward the end of a grading period.
To support your teen’s effort to manage assignments and complete schoolwork on time:
- Know what teachers expect. Make sure both you and your teen understand what kinds of homework her teachers assign and how often. Ask about timelines for special projects.
- Promote healthy habits. Make sure your teen eats, sleeps and exercises enough—so she doesn’t miss school and get behind on assignments.
- Set up a comfortable study area where your teen can work with the fewest distractions.
- Agree on a homework and study schedule and help your teen stick to it.
- Help her learn to break down large assignments into smaller, more manageable parts.
- Suggest that she switch gears if she gets stuck. For example, your teen might change to reading history for a while, and then return to math.
- Build confidence. Remind your teen of what she can do and has done successfully.
- Don’t expect perfection. Make sure that your expectations are realistic for your teen.
- Encourage her to ask teachers for help if she needs it.
- Model a positive attitude. Let your teen know you value schoolwork—and that it’s important to her learning.
