Peer Influence Can Often Be Positive
We often think of peer pressure as a negative force. But that’s only true if your teen is feeling that pressure from negative people! You can help your teen experience the positive influence of peers, too.
You probably know that you can’t pick your teen’s friends. But you can encourage certain activities and interests that will let him meet teens who are likely to be strong peer models. For example:
- Taking part in school-related extracurricular activities. This is probably the easiest way for your teen to meet a positive peer group. If he hasn’t joined anything yet, look over the school website or yearbook together and help him find a club that meets his interests.
- Joining a service club or youth group. These can offer opportunities to participate in positive community activities.
- Entertaining friends at your home (while taking recommended pandemic precautions). Offer a comfortable place to hang out and a variety of snacks. Check in occasionally. It’s important for you to know who your teen's friends are.
It's also helpful to seek out the parents of your teen’s friends. Talk with them about the rules they keep and the values they share with their children. You will probably have something in common. And you’ll be able to counter your teen when he tells you everyone else is allowed to go anywhere and stay out as late as they want to.
