Simple Things Show Your Teen Your Love

Nothing supports your teen like the knowledge that you love her. When she was younger, you probably made a point of telling her you loved her every day. Now that you’re both busier, you may have gotten out of the habit.

Here are five ways to show teens your love:

  1. Remember the little things. Try to do a few special small things for your teen each week. Tuck her favorite treat in her backpack where she’ll find it at school. Pick up a copy of her favorite magazine and wrap it with a ribbon. Write a complimentary note and put it on her pillow.
  2. Be present in your teen's life. Is she on a sports team? Does she sing in a choir? Whatever your teen's interest, make time to be there if families are allowed. Yes, even if she says, “No one else’s parents will be there.”
  3. Schedule time together. You’re busy, and so is your teen. At the beginning of the week, get out your calendar. Write down a time you’ll be together, just you two. Treat it as though it were a meeting with your boss.
  4. Pick your battles. You can engage in constant fights with your teen. Or you can decide what’s really important. So she insists on cutting her hair short or dying it blue; it will grow back. But you have only a short window of time together before she's on her own.
  5. Put it in writing. Send your teen a card. Send them throughout the year. It can be a great way to keep the lines of communication open.
