Encourage Your Teen to Help Make School Safe

Students can do a lot to help make school a safe place to learn. Talk to your teen about actions she can take to reduce conflicts and improve student life at school. Your teen can:

• Help others learn to settle disputes. Many schools offer training for teens who want to become peer counselors.
• Mentor a younger student. Older students can serve as role models.
• Welcome new students. Reaching out to new students helps them feel a part of the school. Encourage your teen to get to know at least one new person.

Reinforce to your teen that students should never bring weapons onto school property. If she is aware that a student has a weapon, she should report it immediately.
