Help Your Teen Get In Shape For Learning
Schools across the nation are working hard to help students become “academically fit” to compete in a competitive world. To help your teen rise to the challenge, begin by expressing your high expectations for what he can do and learn. Then, make time to:
- Find out what your teen is learning this year in core subjects like math, science, history and English.
- Discuss what kinds of projects and assignments your teen will have. Help him meet learning objectives.
- Ask your teen’s teachers what you can do to reinforce what’s being taught in class.
- Encourage your teen to read at least 30 minutes a day.
- Encourage your teen to write—to relatives, in journals, in contests or other creative outlets.
- Engage your teen in “real-world” math. For example, ask him to figure out the amount of materials needed to build something. Or have him calculate the volume of milk your family consumes in a day or week.
