Academic Success Begins With Attendance
“Why do I have to go to school anyway?” When your teen asks this question, you want to have facts at your fingertips. Research shows that school attendance can have a big impact on academic achievement.
Share these facts with your teen:
- Teens can’t learn as well if they aren’t in class. They miss presentations, discussions and answers to their classmates questions. Students who participate in class also do better.
- Teens are more likely to get into trouble if they aren’t in school. One study found that 78 percent of those who ended up in prison had a first arrest for school truancy.
- Teens can have trouble getting a job if they don’t have a good school attendance record. Some employers ask about attendance before they hire a teen. And not completing high school makes employment problems much more likely.
