Table Talk Strengthens Skills—And Families

According to one survey, more than half of all people in the United States watch TV while they eat dinner. That makes good conversation almost impossible.

Experts know that casual talk at the dinner table matters. It builds students' vocabularies and social skills. It lets families work as a team. It allows kids to share their successes.

What you say isn't so important. (Some families encourage everyone to share one success at each family dinner.) But regular table talk can help your teen feel connected.

Teens who feel close to their families are less likely to take part in risky behavior like drugs or sex that can derail school performance. So keep having those dinner conversations. You are giving your kids a shield they'll need to protect themselves from trouble later on.
