Teens Still Need Lots of Guidance
During the teen years, children become more independent. They make an increasing number of decisions on their own. But teens still need lots of guidance from their parents.
Here are some ways to support your teen while acknowledging her need for independence:
- Be an active, attentive listener. Show your teen that you have respect for her thoughts and opinions. Encourage her to come to you without fear of being yelled at or lectured.
- Help her set goals, and recognize her efforts to reach them. Compliment your teen's progress. Teens who feel capable and proud of their accomplishments are more likely to make responsible decisions.
- Place trust in her. Allow your teen to make some decisions so she can learn to trust herself. Let her know you’re always available to help.
- Teach by example. Children, especially teens, don’t like to be told one thing and see parents do another. For example, a parent who smokes may have a hard time persuading a teen not to smoke.
- Provide perspective. Help your teen see how the decisions she makes now will affect her later. Talk about how healthy and unhealthy habits can last a lifetime.
