Reduce Anxiety If Your Teen is a Poor Reader
The older kids are, the more uncomfortable they get if they don’t read well. If this is true of your teen, try these measures to reduce stress and increase reading confidence:
- Don’t force your teen to read aloud to you. You might convey your own anxiety about his poor reading skills.
- Don’t insist your teen read grade-level material in his free time. He will enjoy reading more if he reads what he likes.
- Set an example by reading yourself and keeping a variety of interesting reading material around.
- Don’t read instructions to your teen. If he doesn’t understand them, encourage him to reread them.
- Record instructions, if needed, so your teen can listen while he reads along.
- Look for audio versions of books your teen is reading so he can listen as he reads.
- Don’t “label” your teen a poor reader. Teens tend to live up to labels their parents give them.
- Ask the school to evaluate your teen for a learning disorder if problems persist.
- Be patient and supportive. Without undue pressure, your teen can grow to love reading.
