Help Your Teen Cope With a Broken Heart
Losing “the love of your life” can be devastating for a teenager. Being someone’s girlfriend or boyfriend gives a teen a certain “personal identity” at a time when most teens are trying hard to define themselves. The emotional upheaval from a breakup can divert a teen’s attention from studies and goals and threaten a still fragile sense of self.
To provide support through a breakup:
- Assure your teen that life will get better, whether or not another love comes along.
- Encourage resilience. Discuss the tough times your teen has bounced back from before.
- Listen to your teen's yearnings patiently. Remember, silence is not the same as agreement.
- Consider writing a note about what you feel and hope for your teen. Include how inevitable it is for your teen's wonderful qualities to attract other friends in the future.
- Recruit some allies. A call from a friend or someone else your teen likes may help reaffirm self-esteem. Encourage allies to help get your teen involved in other activities. Ask them to keep you posted if they think of anything you should know or do to help your teen.
