Authoritative Parenting Gets Results

Your parenting “style” can have a large effect on your teen's development.

Research shows that teens whose parents take an authoritative approach fare much better than their peers whose parents don’t. Teens from authoritative households are more confident, responsible and achieve more in school. They are less likely to use drugs or get into trouble for cheating or cutting classes.

So what do authoritative parents do? These parents are:

Firm rather than lenient. They set clear rules that their teens are expected to follow and establish consequences for breaking them. They make sure that their teens understand the rules and what those consequences are.
More accepting than rejecting. Authoritative parents are affectionate and give lots of praise. They are involved in their children’s lives. Their teens know they can turn to them for guidance and support in times of difficulty.
Less controlling and more supportive of their teens’ increasing autonomy. These parents adjust limits as their children age and encourage their teens' sense of individuality.
