Small Children Can Learn Big Words

Children’s vocabularies are filled with short, simple words. But kids also naturally mimic the vocabulary of adults.

Expand your child’s vocabulary by using some “big” words occasionally. (A big word is simply a word your child isn’t using yet.)

To teach your child a big word:

• Repeat the word often.
• Define it. Use it in another sentence.
• Relate it to other words your child already knows. “This apple is yummy. It tastes scrumptious!”

Use big words sparingly. Too many big words can overwhelm young children.
