Specific Praise Gets Results

Praise can be an effective motivator. But to work well, it must be both genuine and very specific. Just saying, "You're wonderful," doesn’t always make children feel good about themselves.

Instead, notice and talk about specific things your child does well. Here are some examples:

• "You really stuck with that math work. I love your persistence."
• "You cleaned your room without my asking. That was very responsible."
• "You organized your report very well. It makes it easy to understand your points."
• "You built a sturdy base for this tower. That will make it more stable."
