Do You Know What Teachers Really Want From Families?
Teamwork between families and schools improves student results in the best of times—and the worst. Often, little things make a big difference.
Here are some things teachers wish families would do:
- Build your child’s confidence.
Before your child starts the school day, offer a hug and a “You got this.” Praise your child’s effort on things that make you proud. - Make sure your child eats a healthy lunch.
A well-balanced diet fuels your child’s brain. Pack a nutritious meal, or if your child eats a school meal, discuss healthy choices.- Ask about your child's school day.
If you aren't with your child in the afternoon, take time to talk about it in the evening. Ask about things your elementary schooler is learning. - Support schoolwork efforts.
Help your child figure out where to find answers or help. - Schedule some quiet time
in the evenings. Your child can use that time to read. - Partner with teachers.
Share concerns with your child’s teacher in private. Avoid criticizing the teacher in front of your child.
