Can a Child Challenge What the Teacher Says?

Teachers are human and can make mistakes. If a student thinks a teacher is wrong, it is still important to respect the teacher's authority. But that doesn't mean the student can't question what the teacher is saying. It just means there's a right and wrong way to do it.

Explain to your child that it's not appropriate to interrupt in the middle of class and say "You're wrong!" or "That's stupid!" It's disrespectful to try to prove the teacher incorrect in front of others.

A better approach is to politely ask questions that promote understanding: "I'm not sure I understand ... ." "Did you mean ... ?" "Well, what if ... ?" "What do you think about ... ?"

Tell your child that students may express their opinions, but not in a rude or argumentative way. And important differences should be discussed in private.
