Role-Play With Your Child

The next time you and your child have a disagreement over behavior, try this tactic. Help your elementary schooler see things from your point of view by switching roles.

First, let things between you calm down. Then, ask your child to pretend to be the parent while you pretend to be the child. Set the stage by explaining why the parent wants the child to do (or not do) the particular thing. Tell your child to act the same way you did earlier. Then start the play.

As the "child," you should act the way your child was acting. As the "parent," your child should explain why different behavior is necessary. Try to convince your "parent" to let you do as you want.

You’ll have some fun mirroring each other’s behavior and reactions, as well as seeing how you look from the other’s point-of-view. But each of you will also get a better feel for the other’s needs, thinking and frustrations when dealing with one another.
