Involve Your Child in Planning Holiday Activities

The holiday season is approaching. Family festivities give children a sense of belonging and an understanding of who they are. This sense is even greater when children aren't merely spectators or guests. Your child will feel valuable when asked to help plan your family's celebrations. And planning boosts creative and organizational abilities.

Before a holiday, sit down with your child and decide:

What your family will eat. Plan a dish that your child can help you make.
What you will do for family fun. Will you watch a little TV? Read stories about the holiday? Take a walk? Play a board game?
What decorations your child will make. Paper holiday napkin holders? Paper chain garlands? A seasonal centerpiece made from items from nature?
What role your child will have in the day’s activities. How could your child help with preparations? Clean up? Watch younger children? Set up for play?
How your family will express appreciation. Some families go around the dinner table and say what they are grateful for, for example.
