Help Your Child Relax With Reading

Even if your work makes it difficult for you to help with schoolwork, you can play an active role in your child's education. One of the best ways to support school success is by encouraging your child to read for pleasure.

Many students today spend as little as four or five minutes a day reading books as a leisure activity. To increase that time, find lots of ways for your child to have fun with reading. You can:

Limiting the time your child spends passively watching screen media outside of school hours will make more time for reading. The first two weeks will be the hardest, but it will get easier. You could also choose one day each week when devices are not turned on at all. Instead, have everyone in the family spend time reading books just for fun.

Read for fun yourself, too. Your example will help your child see that reading is something adults enjoy.

And while maintaining a regular bedtime is important, it is OK to extend it a little sometimes if your child is staying up to read.
