Help Your Child Three Ways Every Day

Families play a big role in their children's school success. When researchers look at the test scores of students who do well—and those who do poorly—they see how important family engagement in education is.

From day to day, you may be helping your child with schoolwork in many different ways. But every day, doing three fundamental things can boost academic achievement.

To support your child, make it a point to:

  1. Ensure class attendance. Teachers can't teach kids who aren't in class. Stress the importance of regular, on-time attendance to your child. Create family routines that make it possible. If obstacles prevent your child from accessing classes, work with the school to find solutions.
  2. Provide reading materials and encourage daily reading. Make it easy for your child to read. Place a variety of books and articles around your home. Check with your local library to find out how to borrow or download new titles. Then set aside daily time for reading.
  3. Balance screen and non-screen activities. Students are doing more online learning for school. So when the school day is over, encourage your child to turn off the screens and use the time for reading, playing board games, exercising or just thinking.
