Reduce Family Stress Eight Easy Ways

There's no question that daily life can be stressful. But constant stress can take a toll on family lives ... and on children. Too often, kids respond to stress by acting out.

By reducing the stress level in your family, you give your child the chance to grow and develop naturally. Here are eight ways to do it:

  1. Start the day on a positive note. Pleasant words and calm routines will get everyone off to a good beginning.
  2. Slow down when spending time with your child.
  3. Avoid comparing your child to others. Each child is unique.
  4. Provide your child with a peaceful home atmosphere. If you and your spouse or partner argue, do so in private.
  5. Plan special activities together as a family.
  6. Give your child a chance to solve problems independently. Provide practice in wise decision-making by offering choices among just a few acceptable options.
  7. Encourage your child to play and do things that children do.
  8. Correct behavior without criticizing your child's character. Make it clear that you will always love your child, even if you do not love a certain behavior.
