How to Motivate Without Nagging

Do you find yourself endlessly repeating commands to get your child to do something? Motivating children to do what they are supposed to is a common challenge. But nagging won't work to develop your child's inner motivation—and that's what's needed for success with schoolwork.

Experts suggest these five steps for motivating children:

  1. Be clear and positive. Tell your child exactly what behavior you want to see.
  2. Pair what you want with what your child wants. “As soon as you have completed your math, we can play a game.” (Make sure your child gets the reward AFTER you get the cooperation you need.)
  3. Promise only what you’re able and willing to deliver. Pick something you can and want to let your child have. Or pick something you can do and want to do together.
  4. Keep your promises. Do what you promised to do—as soon as your child does what you asked.
  5. Pay attention. Notice and make positive comments when your child cooperates the first time you ask.
