Review the School Year & Set Goals for the Next
The end of the school year is approaching. Now is a good time to take stock together of the lessons your child has learned, and plan ways to make improvements next year.
Set aside a time when you can have a relaxing chat with your child. You might even plan something special to do while you talk, such as making a favorite meal together.
During your talk:
- Review the highlights. What was your student’s favorite project this year? In which subject did your child improve the most? Which book was your child's favorite to read? Which challenges did your child overcome? Which goals did your child accomplish?
As your child talks about these positive things, point out the ways your student has grown. “You really worked hard to master division this year. You can do hard things when you put your mind to it!” - Take a look forward. What is your child excited about for next year? Is there a subject or topic your child would like to improve in? Books that sound interesting to read?
- Discuss how learning doesn’t stop at the end of the school year. One of the great things about the summer is the opportunity to learn things that aren’t just academic. Brainstorm together about something your child would like to learn this summer. How to paint? How to speak a new language? Make a plan to help your child achieve the goal.
