Encourage Time Management with a Screen Allowance

An allowance can help children learn to budget their money. A screen allowance can teach them to budget something more priceless—their time.

At the beginning of each week, give your child a recreational screen activity allowance. You might give out tickets, coupons, cards or tokens, each good for a half hour of approved digital media use—TV, videos, games, etc. When the allowance is gone, the screens are turned off (except for academic needs) for the week.

Some families offer to buy back coupons. Others add extra rules—no screens during study time, for example.

The allowance will help your child learn to plan screen use carefully. If there’s a special show coming up that your child wants to watch, for example, suggest “banking” some screen tickets in advance.
