Send Your Child on a Scavenger Hunt Through the News

All children can enjoy reading a newspaper with this simple activity. Give your child some old newspapers (or find one online). Then send your elementary schooler on a scavenger hunt through the articles.

Ask your child to find:

• Something to eat.
• Something to drink.
• Something to play with.
• Something to ride in or on.
• Something to wear.
• Something living.
• Something hot.
• Something cold.
• Something that makes your student frown.
• Something that makes your student smile.
• A number.
• Big black print.
• Tiny print.

Your child can look for the items in words or pictures. Add your own ideas to the list, too. Suggest searching for words that start with the first letter of your child's name. This is a fun reading activity for a rainy day. It’s also a good way to keep your child busy while you read the rest of the news!
