Think Aloud to Teach Your Child

As you move through your day, you make many quick choices that involve reading and writing. If you think out loud as you make these choices, you will help your child learn more about important school skills.

Suppose you need a recipe for a cake. Say, “I don’t have time to read all the recipes in the book. So I’m going to turn to the index in the back. Here under the letter C is a recipe for chocolate cake.” Your child will see how useful an index can be, and that items in it are alphabetized.

Or suppose you’re writing a quick note. Say, “I am asking Grandma a question about a recipe she used to make, so I’d better end this sentence with a question mark.”
