You want your child to be responsible at school and at home. Assigning chores to do lets children practice taking responsibility.

If your elementary schooler resists doing chores, here are some tips:

Make sure your child has the knowledge and supplies necessary to complete the task. If the chore is making a bed, for example, practice together until your child is confident doing it. Use bedding that makes the job fairly easy.
Schedule chores to match your child's energy level. Choose a chore time when your child isn't tired or busy. Your student might water the plants every Saturday, for example.
Give your child a say in chore assignments. After listing necessities, ask which general tasks sound best to your elementary schooler. Your child might actually enjoy putting away laundry or washing the dog.
Do chores as a family. Your child will learn that it takes everyone's effort to keep the household running.
Find ways to motivate. Post sayings, such as “Do your personal best!” Or mention fun, after-chore activities: “As soon as the recycling is outside, we can play a game.”
Use a job chart to keep track of progress. Don’t require perfection, but expect your child to give the task a good effort and finish promptly.
Praise responsible work and thank your child for helping the family succeed!
