Leave Fixing Assignments Up to Your Child

Schoolwork is often a battleground for families. Some parents insist that their child redo assignments until every part of them is right. This often leads to arguments among family members.

Instead, try a different approach. When your child finishes an assignment, review the work together. If you see an incorrect answer, ask, “Do you think that answer is correct?”

A child who isn't sure might ask for help. If your child asks, you can supply it. But let your child decide how—and if—to change an answer.

Your child might also say, “I don’t care.” This might mean that your student is tired and frustrated. Perhaps it’s time for a break.

Rather than argue over answers, allow your child to take incorrect work back to school. The teacher will see where your child is confused and can point out what’s wrong. Knowing where students go wrong also helps teachers decide whether it's necessary to reteach a concept. If your child continues to struggle with schoolwork, work with the teacher to find a solution.
