Help Your Child Study for Tests
Whether they are studying for a weekly quiz or a big end of unit test, most elementary schoolers can benefit from some study guidance from their parents. To help your child study for tests:
- Encourage your elementary schooler to find out what the test covers. Your child should ask the teacher (and then write down) whether the test is only on Chapter 6 or whether it will also cover Chapter 7.
- Help your student get organized. Make sure your child has everything needed before starting to study. For example, to study for a spelling test, your child needs a copy of this week’s spelling words. For a math unit test, your child needs the assignments, handouts and quizzes on that unit.
- Make a schedule. Set aside some study time each day for several days before the test. Don’t let your child get in the habit of “cramming” on the night before the test. Children learn and remember more if they study in multiple short sessions over time.
- Have your child think about what the teacher might ask. One of the best ways to study for a test is to write some likely questions, then think about the answers to them. Chances are, some of the questions your child thinks of will show up on the test. Students who think about answers to possible questions ahead of time feel more confident going into tests.
