Try a Silent Solution to Encourage Tidiness

Seeing a task through includes cleaning up afterward. This is an important part of responsibility and organization. Using a “Silent Custodian” at home can help your child learn this lesson. And it may even help your elementary schooler develop a tidy habit.

Whenever your child’s messes have gotten out of hand, simply announce “The silent custodian will be making rounds soon. Be sure your things are picked up.” Give your child time to tidy up. Then, bring out a large box (the silent custodian). Whatever your child didn't pick up goes into the box. No item can be taken back out of the box until your child completes a task of your choice.
