Build Your Child’s Reading Comprehension

Children can often read the words on a page without understanding everything they’ve read. To help your child build reading comprehension, pause during reading time to ask questions such as:

Talk about the answers together. If your child can’t answer a question, read a relevant passage again. Encourage your elementary student to think about these questions when reading. As young readers get into the habit of thinking about reading material, they read more carefully and understand more of what they read.
