Encourage Compassion With Valentines

Valentine's Day (February 14) is coming up. This year, celebrate the holiday by teaching your child the importance of caring for others. Together, make a list of people who might like to receive a valentine—perhaps those who might not receive any other cards. There might be a child at school who doesn’t have many friends. Or there may be a neighbor who lives alone, a helpful clerk in the neighborhood store, a friendly bus driver or the school custodian who keeps the building looking nice and neat.

While making valentine cards for family and friends, encourage your child to make some for the people on the list. If possible, help your child deliver these cards in person—seeing the joy on the face of the person who receives the card will encourage your child to make other kind gestures in the future.
