When Reading Together, Pause for Discussion

Strong readers read reflectively. They think about what they read.

As you read stories with your child, pause from time to time to discuss the language and content. Encourage your child to think about:

• The meanings of new words. Have your student try using the words in other sentences. Talk about words that have similar meanings.
• The ways the story relates to your child’s life and to familiar ideas and information. What’s similar? What’s different?
• The characters, problems and events in the story. What does your child think will happen next? How are the problems solved? How would your child solve them?
