Positive Messages Get Results

Positive messages are an effective way to enlist children’s cooperation. Suppose your child has been dawdling over schoolwork. You could say, “I hope you will finish your assignment and do a good job. Then we can all play games and eat popcorn after dinner.”

Of course, you could also say, “No schoolwork, no games after dinner.” The message is the same. But one way feels like a threat. The other way feels like an invitation. Which would your child be more likely to respond positively to?
