Talk About Science With Your Child
You’ll probably be met with a big groan if you simply walk up to your child and say, “Let’s talk about science.” You may have better luck if you bring up something more specific–science includes so many fascinating topics.
To develop your child's interest in science:
- Notice the moon and stars each night. Ask what your child can tell you about the current shape of the moon. Can your student point out any constellations of stars? Check out a library book with constellation pictures (or do an image search online) to discover some. Then look for them in the sky.
- Discuss alcohol and illegal drugs from a scientific perspective. What exactly are their harmful effects on the body? Help your child look this information up to confirm what you are saying.
- Talk about the food your family eats. Why is it important to eat vegetables? To limit sweets? What does protein do for the body?
- Talk about some of the electronic devices and conveniences you didn't have growing up, such as a smartphone, a digital camera or the internet. Ask how your child thinks this technology is influencing the lives of today's children.
