Collecting Can Build Important School Skills
Your elementary schooler's bed is overflowing with stuffed animals, and your child still wants more. A sibling spends hours sorting trading cards.
Guess what? Collections can be great learning tools. Here are some of the school skills kids can learn from collecting, and what you can do to reinforce them:
- Reading. Young collectors often want to learn more about their interests. Visit the library and look for books or magazines on your child’s collecting interests. Help your child go online to search for websites with more information.
- Math. Most kids enjoy counting and sorting their collections. Encourage your child to find new ways to put collectibles into categories—not just red stuffed animals, but also animals that live in South America, for example. If your child collects coins, suggest arranging them by value, and also in order by date. When your child is thinking about adding to a collection, calculate together whether your child has the money to make the purchase.
- Organizing. Kids can learn organization skills by managing their collections. How will your child display the items, for example? Your child may also want to keep a catalog of the entire collection. Creating a digital catalog is a good way for students to learn basic computer skills.
