Earning Rewards Encourages Children to Keep Trying

Many of the things children need to learn—such as times tables or vocabulary words—take time and practice to master. But, to be honest, practicing them isn’t always fun for kids.

One way to keep your child interested is to reward solid efforts. Stock a jar or bag with small treats. Then you and your child can agree on the number of diligent practice sessions that are needed to earn a treat. As your child's skills improve, adjust the number upward to maintain the challenge. When study habits are firmly established, you can eliminate the treats.
