Solve a Local History Mystery

Is your street named for a flower, a tree or a famous person? How did your town get its name? What other questions can your child think of about where you live?

The next time you're in the library with your child, check out some local history. Ask the librarian to point you toward books that may have the answers to your child’s questions. Or see if you can find old copies of your local newspaper, in paper form or online. Some kids get really interested. Your elementary schooler may want to interview older citizens or visit your courthouse to get answers. Help your child follow up on the leads!
