Parent-Proven Tips Support Student Success

How can you raise a child who does well in school and beyond? Stay engaged and emphasize the importance of education. That’s the advice of parents whose teens qualified for “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.”

Four out of five parents surveyed said that getting a good education was the most important factor for their child’s future success and happiness. They also said they wanted their children to be able to think for themselves, to respect parents and teachers, to be kind and considerate, to be hard-working, to be ambitious, and to be imaginative and creative.

The parents surveyed offered this advice for other families:

Let your child know your love is unconditional.
Take time to talk with your child. Respect your child's opinions.
Give your child an ethical foundation.
Get involved with the things your child is interested in.
Teach your child the importance of a good education.
Offer your child support and encouragement.
Encourage your child to strive for personal bests.
Make it clear that your child can rely on you.
Discipline with consistency and fairness.
Let your child make decisions and take responsibility for choices.
