Write Thank-You Notes With Your Child
The thank-you note sometimes seems like an endangered species. But these notes are an excellent way to help your children practice writing skills and develop appreciation.
To encourage your children to write thank-you notes:
- Have supplies on hand. Give each family member a gift of note cards—or paint or stamp your own unique cards as a family project.
- Gather everyone together the day after gift-giving. Put out lots of pens and pencils, stamps, a dictionary and a crumb-free snack. Let your kids put on some music. Then dive into writing.
- Remember that two or three heartfelt sentences are enough. Your child should mention the gift by name and thank the giver for being so thoughtful.
- Explain that it really is the thought that counts. Even if the gift was a clunker, "Thank you so much for thinking of me" will express appreciation nicely.
- Write your own thank-you notes. Your example is the best teacher.
