Help Your Child Remember Verbal Instructions
In order to do well in school, children must learn to follow verbal instructions. To increase your child's ability to do this, play a game:
- Hide something—like an inexpensive toy or a coin. Tell your child exactly how to find it.
- Start simply by giving only two or three directions. Increase the complexity of the directions as your child's skill improves.
- Reinforce the ability to remember spoken information. Help your child visualize carrying out an instruction such as "Pick up the right-hand cushion on the couch." Suggest creating a mental image of your child's right arm reaching out to lift the pillow.
- Have your child repeat instructions before following them.
- Switch roles. Have your child hide something and give you directions!
