Help Your Child Remember Verbal Instructions

In order to do well in school, children must learn to follow verbal instructions. To increase your child's ability to do this, play a game:

  1. Hide something—like an inexpensive toy or a coin. Tell your child exactly how to find it.
  2. Start simply by giving only two or three directions. Increase the complexity of the directions as your child's skill improves.
  3. Reinforce the ability to remember spoken information. Help your child visualize carrying out an instruction such as "Pick up the right-hand cushion on the couch." Suggest creating a mental image of your child's right arm reaching out to lift the pillow.
  4. Have your child repeat instructions before following them.
  5. Switch roles. Have your child hide something and give you directions!
