Games and Reading Keep Your Child's Brain Active Over Break

Your child is probably looking forward to a winter break from school. The vacation is a time for fun, not for formal schoolwork. But you can still help keep your child's mind sharp and learning, even on break.

The teacher may ask your child to do something specific, like read a certain book or keep a journal while on break. You can also encourage your child to:

• Catch up on pleasure reading. Last term's schoolwork may have prevented your student from reading the next installment in a favorite book series. Winter break is the perfect time to dig in!
• Write a letter. If your child receives gifts over break, schedule a day for making notecards and writing thank-you letters. Your child can also send newsy notes or emails to friends or relatives.
• Play board games with family or friends. These often require math, vocabulary and higher-level thinking skills, such as logic and strategy.
