Help Your Child Review Writing Assignments
Before your child turns in a writing assignment, explain how to review so your student can be sure it is a "best effort." Teach your elementary schooler to keep these questions in mind:
- Does it make sense? Read the writing to see if you can understand what your child is trying to say. Mark an X beside sentences that don't make sense, and ask your child to clarify.
- Are paragraphs used correctly? Each paragraph should focus on one specific idea.
- Are sentences correct? Each sentence needs a subject and a verb. A sentence should express a complete thought.
- Have I used the best word? There's a difference between happy and thrilled. Help your child think about the best words to express ideas.
- Is the paper formatted correctly? Teachers usually have a format they want students to follow.
- Is the writing legible? Your child should make sure that the writing is neat.
