Encourage Respect and Care for the Environment
Schools and families want children to take care of their belongings. Students also need to learn to care for and respect school property and other people's property. One way for families to encourage this behavior is by involving children in efforts to care for the environment.
Children aren't responsible for many of today's environmental issues, and they can't clean up the whole world. But they can learn to be part of the solutions.
Here are some things you can do to help your child care for the environment:
- Work as a family. Talk with your child about why people need to protect the environment. Ask for your child's ideas. How could your family help?
- Get involved locally. Look for opportunities around you. Perhaps a forest service office near you is giving away tree seedlings to plant. You and your child might volunteer to plant some of these in a park near your home.
- Learn more. If your child wants to learn about animals, help find out about their habitats. If your child is worried about litter, teach about recycling.
- Start small. Even small actions make a difference. Help your child make litter bags for your family car, to encourage proper disposal of trash.
- Make choices. In the store, have your child look at the extra packaging that comes on some products. Consider this when discussing which products to choose for your family.
- Visit a local recycling center together. Have your child make a list of all the items that your family could recycle.
