Holidays mean more than big meals and football games on TV. They also offer you and your child a wonderful chance to learn and spend time together.

Here are some ways to make the most of holiday time:

Plan some activities everyone can share. Holidays often bring families together. Do things together that include everyone, young and old.
Make a gratitude list. The pilgrims who observed the first Thanksgiving were thankful for their survival in a new land. Make a list of things for which your family is thankful. Post the list.
Read the poem, "Over the River and Through the Wood" with your child. It tells the story of a Thanksgiving long ago. Will you be seeing your family this holiday season? If not, help your child write a letter describing activities to family members far away.
Help your child learn more about your family's history. One way is by interviewing grandparents, aunts, or uncles. Your child might ask questions about the family's arrival in this country, or about unusual or challenging experiences. Encourage your child to record these stories and possibly even write them down later.
Set aside some extra time for reading aloud. Consider delaying bedtime over the holiday weekend for a longer reading time.
