Give Your Child Genuine, Specific Praise
Children crave their parents' praise and encouragement. The right kind of praise helps them feel valued and encourages them to keep trying.
To praise your child effectively:
- Be specific. Say exactly what your child did well. For example, instead of saying, "You're a good helper," say, "Thank you for folding the towels so neatly."
- Praise effort. Notice when your child tries something new. Compliment persistence.
- Be honest. If you praise your child for everything, your praise will begin to lose its meaning. Offer praise only when your child has earned it.
- Praise progress. Children are more motivated when their parents notice how they have improved.
