Encourage Your Child to Do Mental Math

Doing mental math builds students' math fluency. To help your child practice adding without paper and pencil, make a game of it. Challenge each other to add strings of numbers together.

Here's how:

  1. Start with single-digit numbers. Give your child four numbers (1, 9, 8, 3), one at a time, to add together. Allow enough time after you say each number for your child to add it to the previous one. Repeat this until your student has mastered the process. Let your child give you numbers to add, too.
  2. Move on to give four double-digit numbers (22, 10, 11, 16). Again, give them one at a time with space in between for adding.
  3. Next, give four numbers all at once.
  4. Progress to giving five, six and more numbers as your child becomes a pro at mental math!
