Get Close to Get Your Child's Attention

Do you often find yourself yelling instructions repeatedly to get your child to do as you ask? The problem could be the physical distance between you.

When giving directions, it's best to stop what you're doing and go to where your child is. When you get close, you can use eye contact and facial expressions—not your vocal cords—to get your child's attention.

Parents who do this find it takes less time to walk to where their children are and help them do what's needed than to yell over and over again—and their children learn about respectful communication.
