Reading about violence in schools can make families feel scared and powerless. But there are steps you can take to make school a safer place:

Talk to your children. This is the best way to stay involved with their lives. Children often know about situations that could turn violent before adults do.
Set clear rules and limits. When children know what the boundaries are, they actually feel a sense of freedom. Rules often work best if children are involved in deciding on them.
Learn the warning signs. If you know what's normal for your child, you will see the small changes that can mean trouble lies ahead. If children drop out of activities they previously enjoyed, for example, parents should learn why. Lying, changes in eating or sleeping or physical problems may also be a sign.
Act responsibly. Parents sometimes worry that their children won't like them if they take a stand. Don't let that stop you from taking action when you believe your child needs help.
Stay involved with the school. Be aware of school safety rules and support them.
Work with the school. Join the efforts to maintain safety and help kids learn how to solve problems without violence.
