Consider These Things When Choosing Books for Your Child
Having the right books when children are young can turn them on to reading for a lifetime.
The right books aren't necessarily the expensive ones. They just need to be well-written and designed. Most importantly, they should appeal to your child.
When choosing books:
- Consider who your child is. Look for books that match your child's current interests and personality.
- Don't hesitate to choose a book that's a little beyond your child's ability. You can read it aloud now. Your child can read it independently later on.
- Don't force your child to read classics. Some children find contemporary books more appealing, though they may enjoy reading classics as a family.
- Choose books for reading together that have strong plots and well-developed characters.
- Look at the words used. Most should be familiar to your child. Some can be challenging.
